Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

DO HOME EDUCATION STUDENTS HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITY AS PUBLIC AND NONPUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS
TO ENTER A COLLEGE OF THEIR CHOICE?

Yes, depending on the student's qualifications and the admission requirements of the postsecondary institution. In order to understand the specific admission requirements of a postsecondary institution, home educators should directly contact the admissions office of the institution in which they have an interest and ask what are the specific admissions requirements for homeschoolers. Each college has their own admissions requirements for homeschoolers.

For example, below you will find the Dallas County Community College General Admissions Policy and admissions requirements for First Time Students. (This information was accessed on 11/19/2012.)

NOTE: The admissions requirements for First Time Students includes the admissions requirements for "homeschooled" students.

EXAMPLE OF A COMMUNITY COLLEGE ADMISSIONS POLICY

Dallas County Community College General Admissions Policy
The college's open door admissions policy ensures that every person who can benefit from higher education has the opportunity to enroll. Students admitted are automatically admitted to the seven colleges of the Dallas County Community College District composed of Brookhaven, Cedar Valley, Eastfield, El Centro, Mountain View, North Lake and Richland colleges. Admitted students may take courses at any of the colleges under certain conditions.

First Time Students
You may apply as a beginning freshman if you meet one of these standards:

  • You are a graduate of an accredited high school.
  • You are a graduate of an unaccredited high school and are 18 years of age or older.
  • You earned an International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD)
  • You earned a General Education Diploma (G.E.D.).
  • You are at least 18 years of age and do not have a diploma or G.E.D (may be admitted by individual approval).

If you are under the age of 18, are no longer enrolled in high school of any kind and do not have a diploma or a G.E.D., you may be admitted by one of the following:

  • A written recommendation of the principal or superintendent of the last high school you attended, or
  • Show results indicating you have the ability to benefit from the college's programs through performance on an assessment test associated with the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) program. These tests are the ACCUPLACER, ASSET, COMPASS, or Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA). ACCUPLACER and ASSET are available at the college.

If you are 16, did not graduate from an accredited school, but did graduate from a non-accredited high school, or were schooled in a non-traditional setting (i.e., home-schooled), you may be admitted if you meet all of the following conditions:

  • Present a written recommendation of the principal or superintendent of the last school you attended, or TSI approved test results indicating you have the ability to benefit from the college's programs; and
  • Present a notarized record of the high school equivalent work completed and the date of successful completion; and
  • Complete the enrollment agreement noting you understand and accept that academic freedom and the collegiate environment is supported in all courses within the college and
  • Agree to limitations on conditions of admission established by the college.

After you are admitted, but prior to registration, you must have test scores on file from a TSI approved test, and an official high school transcript that you have earned within the last five years.

WHAT DOES A DIPLOMA MEAN?
In general, a diploma is a certificate by which a person or organization certifies that the person named on the diploma has successfully completed a program of study. A high school diploma certifies that a student has successfully completed a program of secondary education.

WHO MUST SIGN THE DIPLOMA?
Because the diploma attests to the fact that the student finished his/her high school program, it should be signed by someone who exercised authority over the student's high school program and who has verified that the student successfully completed the program. In the case of a homeschooled student, the parent is generally the appropriate person to sign. The home is the actual school of record.

CAN A PARENT SIGN A DIPLOMA EVEN IF HE/SHE DID NOT PERSONALLY TEACH ALL THE CLASSES?
Yes. For a homeschooled student, the parent signs the student's high school diploma. Only the parent knows if the student truly accomplished what the parent required. Even if persons outside the family taught the student, the parent will still know if the student accomplished what was required in the class.

CAN MORE THAN ONE PERSON SIGN THE DIPLOMA?
Yes. There may be several people equally qualified to sign the diploma, such as both parents, in the case of a homeschooler. Additionally, other persons can sign the diploma as witnesses to verify the fact that the diploma was issued, but this is not essential.

HOW CAN I ORDER A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA AND TRANSCRIPT?
We will provide the parent with a transcript record of all courses successfully completed, using Homeschool of America Curriculum materials, which includes the results of tests and assessments FREE OF CHARGE. The parent may print a transcript directly from our online program. The parent can also order a high school diploma from the HSLDA Store at http://www.nexternal.com/hslda/high-school-c8.aspx Their main web site is: www.hslda.org

WHAT IS A HOMESCHOOL PORTFOLIO?
A home school portfolio is required by most states, in order to document what type of curriculum was taught during the year, tests that were taken, projects and assignments, field trips and any other activities that contributed to the child's education. Our Teacher Guide provides you with a full set of easy-to-follow instructions on how to create and maintain a student portfolio.
